About Orion Hub

An independent magazine about the tools developers actually work in, and what changing them costs.

Most writing about software is about what to build. This one is about what you build it in: the editor and its language servers, the environment your team reproduces on a new laptop, the pipeline that decides how long a change takes to reach production, the profiler that tells you whether last week's rewrite helped, and the licence on the dependency holding it all up.

What we cover

Six sections, each with a working brief rather than a keyword: Dev Tools for the daily craft of the toolchain, Cloud & DevOps for environments and pipelines, Open Source for licensing, governance and supply chain, Languages & Frameworks for toolchains and migrations, Performance for measurement, and Data & AI for machine assistance in the developer loop.

Why this domain

orionhub.org was, years ago, the address of a hosted browser-based development environment. That project has moved on and this site has no connection to it, to the Eclipse Foundation or to any of its trademarks. What survives is the subject: development that happens in a browser tab, on someone else's machine, in an environment somebody had to reproduce. It seemed a reasonable place to write about tooling.

The archive

Articles published here before the relaunch remain online at their original addresses, including commissioned pieces in several languages. They are collected in the archive and are not presented as our editorial work. Nothing has been removed.

Editorial standards are set out in how we work. To reach the desk, see contact and submissions.
